Must-See Movies of 2010

I posted this list on my Facebook a little while back, but I thought I would repost it here.  There are a lot of exciting movies this year, and this list is the most exciting and interesting for me.

 Book of Eli

The Book of Eli

Release Date: 15 January 2010
Directed by: Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes
Starring: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis

A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was an excellent example of how the post-apocalyptic setting is under-used and can provide a powerful backdrop to a story.
 Edge of Darkness

Edge of Darkness

Release Date: 29 January 2010
Directed by: Martin Campbell
Starring: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone

As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

Edge of Darkness was a predictible story but showed that Mel has still got what it takes to deliver great action on screen.
 The Wolfman

The Wolfman

Release Date: 12 February 2010
Directed by: Joe Johnston
Starring: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving

Shutter Island

Shutter Island

Release Date: 19 February 2010
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow

Set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

Shutter Island features excellent performances and some great directing but for me, the 'twist' was way too easy to figure out.
 Cop Out

Cop Out

Release Date: 26 February 2010
Directed by: Kevin Smith
Starring: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott

A comedy about a veteran NYPD cop whose rare baseball card is stolen. Since it's his only hope to pay for his daughter's upcoming wedding, he recruits his partner to track down the thief, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster.

As Kevin Smith's first directorial effort which he didn't write, I had high hopes for this movie. I wasn't blown away, but it was pretty good. Tracy Morgan always makes me laugh, and Bruce was, well, Bruce.
